Students will learn that through their actions they can give emotional support to a classmate who is returning to school following a cancer diagnosis and/or treatment, will write for various purposes and audiences, and will organize and implement a service project to support a classmate who is battling pediatric cancer.

In this unit, students will be able to identify cancerous cells from non-cancerous cells and discuss the physical effects of cancer on the human body. Students will learn about the Pasta for Pennies program through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s School to Youth division; write letters to different audiences (ie. school board, school administration, teachers and students) to explain the Pasta for Pennies program and to ask permission to implement the program in their school; and, they will implement the Pasta for Pennies program to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
