Hello Melissa.

I saw the film yesterday as a part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. It was long! 4 hours! But every second deserved to be there. Lion was an amazing piece of film. Aside from how awesome it was as a film, it was an incredibly truthful and beautiful portrait of 5 young americans living with cancer.

My mother is in remission (non hodgkins lymphoma) and I have lost a few close friends to cancer. Myself, I am on a chemotherapy drug (methotrexate) for arthritis. Even though i only get injected with the drug once a week, and it’s a small amount, i feel rotten, sick, tired. So I felt like I owed it to these children to witness their stories, their experiences, their struggles and their fears. I cried hard for a good couple of hours - it moved me so much.

As I watched the different families react in very unique ways to cancer, It made me think a lot about these private times, where everyone’s roles and abilities are thrown up into the air. nobody has any control anymore. it is crazy. so crazy. It reminded me of my own memories around my mum’s cancer… The morning she told us as a family; Watching her body change; Seeing her in remission; Waiting for test results; Lying beside her in her hospital bed; The other amazing everyday people who you meet in the wards you spend your days in… So many different memories!

Thank you for allowing us in.
Beautiful, amazing, strong warrior children.

Alex, Tim, Justin.
Time to rest now.
I wish I could have swaddled you in my love.
Precious Children.

Sincerely,
alana x
